entitlement???.......

We teachers at school like to discuss the lack of manners and respect in children at school. Even in such a young age, there is already of feeling of entitlement or what I refer to as the "you owe me" syndrome. And yet, there are those children whom are wonderful and really make you feel like you are still making a difference in their lives. I have one little girl, Sammy, who just comes up and gives me a hug, asking nothing in return. It warms the heart... and gives me the strength to deal with a few others that are more liken to a prickly pear!! Which in a roundabout way, brings me to my "friend" "Mr. Squirrel." Now, my friend, likes to climb up into our tree where we have two bird feeders filled with birdseed. Notice I say, birdseed not squirrel seed. He or she- don't know which, sits right above said bird feeder, looking around, looking right at me - mocking me - daring me - to come out and do something about it! He/she knows perfectly well, that there is NO WAY in you know what, that I'm running out there in the sub freezing cold just to scare away a squirrel. He/she is no fool. Then the squirrel proceeds to hang upside down and shake the bird feeder to get the birdseed to fall to the ground. Pretty clever I might add. To which I have to ask "is he/she entitled to the birdseed.?" Just because you are bigger than a bird does that make it right? Or is it survival of the fittest? I guess after all, a squirrel has to eat too.
